Ayurveda is one of the most ancient systems of medicine, so old that Its origin can be traced back to the Vedas. Ayurveda utilizes the treasure of nature to treat all kinds of ailments. It is the biological link between man and nature. Ayurveda emphasizes on balance with nature and is based on the principle that whatever is present in the universe is also present in the human body. Humans are microcosmic representations of the universe and health can be attained by living in harmony with nature. Some of the basic principles of Ayurveda are – Thepanchamahabhutas (the five basic elements), The tridosha(the three bodily humours), Saptadhatu and oja( the seven tissueelements), Shatpadarthas, malas, srotasa ( channels of the body)etc. 2. Ayurveda is an ancient science, said to be eternal, and in the scriptures, the word ‘shashwat’ has been used for it which means that which has continuous, nonstop flow. Ayurveda has always treated a man as a whole. It never concentrates on any disease in particular, but treats the whole individual, first by finding out what exactly the root cause of the disease is. The relation between physical and mental illnesses(psychic and psychosomatic disorders) have been very well described in this ancient science, and the treatment principles have accordingly been given.
